Percentage increase calculator
Find the percent growth from an old value to a new value.
How the percentage increase calculator works
Enter the original value and the new value, then press “Calculate increase”. The tool divides the change by the original value and converts it to a percent — so a price rising from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase.
increase % = ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100
If the new value is lower than the old one, the answer is negative — that’s a decrease, and you’ll find a dedicated percentage decrease calculator for that case.
Percentage increase calculator FAQ
What is the percentage increase formula?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100: ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100.
Why can’t the original value be zero?
Division by zero is undefined in mathematics — a percent change from zero has no meaningful answer, so the tool asks for a non-zero original value.
What does a negative result mean?
The new value is lower than the old one, so it is actually a decrease. The page shows the negative figure and points you to the percentage decrease calculator.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
Going from 20% to 25% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 25% increase relative to the original 20%. The two phrases answer different questions.
