Roof Shingle Bundle Calculator

Enter your roof area in square feet and the shingle type, and this roof shingle bundle calculator converts it into roofing squares and bundles — with 10% cutting waste included and ridge cap bundles shown separately.

Your roof
squares = area ÷ 100 · bundles = ⌈squares × 3 × 1.1⌉ · ridge bundles = ⌈squares ÷ 3⌉

Both types ship 3 bundles per square in this estimate; some architectural lines ship 4 — check the manufacturer. Waste is 10%.

How the roof shingle bundle calculator works

Roofers price and package shingles by the “square”: one square covers 100 square feet. Both 3-tab and most architectural shingles ship 3 bundles per square, so the field count is squares × 3, plus 10% for cuts at hips, valleys, and rakes — rounded up, because a job that runs one bundle short stops work.

Ridge caps are separate: roughly one bundle of cap shingles covers three squares of ridge run. Valley-heavy roofs (complex cuts) should use 15% waste instead of 10.

squares = area / 100 · bundles = ⌈squares × 3 × 1.1⌉ · ridge = ⌈squares / 3⌉

Roof shingle bundle calculator FAQ

How many bundles of shingles per square?

Three for 3-tab and most architectural shingles — one square covers 100 sq ft, so a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares = 60 bundles of field shingles before the 10% waste allowance. Some heavyweight architectural lines ship 4 per square.

3-tab vs architectural shingles?

3-tab are flat, single-layer, and cheapest (20–25 year life); architectural (dimensional) are laminated, thicker, more wind-resistant, and typically last 25–30+ years. The bundle count per square is usually the same 3.

What waste factor should I use for shingles?

10% for simple gable roofs; 15% for roofs with multiple hips, valleys, and dormers where cuts eat more stock. Steep roofs waste a bit more since cutoffs cannot be reused as easily.

How many ridge cap shingles do I need?

About one bundle per three squares of roof area — a 20-square roof needs roughly 7 bundles of ridge caps. Pre-cut caps are faster; site-cut caps from field shingles work but take longer.

How do I measure roof area?

Measure the footprint length × width, multiply by the roof pitch area multiplier (1.118 for 6/12), and double for two slopes — or use our roof pitch calculator to get the multiplier, then enter the result above.
