Time to Decimal Calculator
Convert hours, minutes, and seconds into decimal hours — the format payroll and timesheets use. This hours to decimal calculator also converts decimal time back into hours, minutes, and seconds.
How the time to decimal calculator works
Payroll systems, timesheets, and billing tools record time in decimal hours instead of hours and minutes — 2 hours 30 minutes becomes 2.50. Enter hours, minutes, and seconds and this calculator divides the minutes by 60 and the seconds by 3600, then adds them to the hours.
It also works in reverse: type a decimal like 2.75 and get back 2 hours, 45 minutes, 0 seconds. Results update live as you type, and minutes or seconds outside 0–59 are flagged so typos do not slip into a timesheet.
decimal = h + m/60 + s/3600 · reverse: h = floor(d), m = floor((d−h)×60), s = round((((d−h)×60)−m)×60)

Time to decimal calculator FAQ
What is decimal time?
Decimal time expresses hours as a decimal number instead of hours and minutes. 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.50 decimal hours; 45 minutes is 0.75. Payroll software uses it because decimals multiply cleanly with hourly rates.
Why do timesheets use decimal hours?
Multiplying 2.5 hours by a $20 hourly rate is simpler and less error-prone than working with 2 hours 30 minutes. Decimal hours keep payroll math exact.
How do I convert 15, 30, or 45 minutes?
Divide by 60: 15 minutes = 0.25, 30 minutes = 0.50, 45 minutes = 0.75 decimal hours. The calculator does this for any minute value instantly.
Can I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Yes — use the reverse converter. Multiply the decimal part by 60: 2.75 hours is 2 hours plus 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
Does it handle seconds?
Yes. Seconds are divided by 3600, so 90 seconds adds 0.025 decimal hours. Most timesheets ignore seconds, but the math stays exact.
