Paver calculator

Laying a patio, walkway, or driveway? Enter the area’s length and width plus your paver size, and this paver calculator tells you how many pavers to order — including extra for cuts along edges and curves.

Area and paver size

How the paver calculation works

Each paver covers its length × width in square inches; dividing by 144 converts that to square feet. Dividing your total area by one paver’s coverage gives the exact count — then a waste allowance covers edge cuts, curves, and breakage.

Straight rectangular patios need about 10% extra. Diagonal patterns, curves, and circles need around 15% because nearly every edge paver gets cut.

pavers = ⌌area_sqft ÷ (paver_L_in × paver_W_in ÷ 144) × (1 + waste%)⌉

Paver calculator FAQ

How many 12×12 pavers do I need for a 10×10 patio?

100 square feet ÷ 1 sq ft per paver = 100 pavers, plus 10% waste = 110 pavers.

Do I need to account for the gaps between pavers?

No — sand joints are only ⅛–¼ inch and barely change the count. The waste allowance covers them.

How much waste should I add for pavers?

10% for straight layouts; 15% for diagonal patterns, curves, or circles with heavy cutting.

How many pavers cover one square foot?

It depends on size: 12×12 in covers 1 sq ft each (1 per sq ft); 6×6 in covers ¼ sq ft (4 per sq ft); 4×8 in covers about 0.22 sq ft (4.5 per sq ft).

What base do pavers need?

Typically 4–6 inches of compacted gravel plus 1 inch of bedding sand, with edge restraints to stop the pavers spreading.

Can I calculate an irregular area?

Break it into rectangles, calculate each, and add them up — or measure the total square footage and enter a length × width that matches it.
