How the driveway sealer coverage calculator works

Sealer coverage is simple division: driveway square footage times the number of coats, divided by the coverage rate per gallon (250–350 sq ft). The calculator rounds up to whole gallons — and to 5-gallon pails for the cost estimate, since that is how sealer is sold.

Two things change the math: surface condition (old, porous asphalt needs up to 30% more on the first coat) and coats. Two thin coats are the pro standard — they last 2–3 years versus patchy protection from a single heavy coat.

gallons = ceil(area × coats ÷ coverage/gal) · pails = ceil(gallons ÷ 5) · 600 sq ft, 2 coats @ 300 = 4 gal

Driveway sealer coverage calculator FAQ

How many square feet does a gallon of driveway sealer cover?

About 250–350 sq ft per gallon per coat on asphalt in average condition. Old, porous, or never-sealed driveways drink more — plan on the 250 end for the first coat.

How many gallons of sealer for a 2-car driveway?

A typical 2-car driveway is about 600 sq ft, which needs roughly 2 gallons per coat at 300 sq ft/gal — so about 4 gallons for the recommended two coats.

Should I apply one or two coats of driveway sealer?

Two thin coats. Two light coats bond better and last longer than one heavy coat, which can peel or track. Let the first coat dry 24 hours before the second.

How much does it cost to seal a driveway?

DIY runs about $50–$150 in sealer for a typical driveway; hiring a pro costs roughly $150–$400 ($0.50–$1 per sq ft). Pros include crack filling and edging in the price.

How long does driveway sealer last?

About 2–3 years on a residential driveway. Sun, snowplows, and oil drips shorten it — reseal when water stops beading on the surface.

When is the best time to seal a driveway?

When daytime temperatures stay above 50°F for at least 24–48 hours with no rain in the forecast — typically late spring through early fall. Seal every 2–3 years.

Can I apply sealer over old sealer?

Yes, as long as the old sealer is still adhering. Clean thoroughly, fill cracks wider than a quarter inch, and spot-prime bare or oil-stained areas first.
